Director of Human Resources
Denton Publishing Company

I would like to take this opportunity to urge publishers of every daily and non-daily paper in the South to participate in this year's SNPA Salary Survey, as well as the 2010 Survey of Employee Benefits. Both provide a wealth of information that will prove invaluable throughout the coming year.
The salary survey is an excellent tool for reviewing salaries and staffing levels. It is always helpful – during the best of years, as well as during challenging years – to be able to review this type of information and to compare your information to outside sources. The salary survey also gives you the resources to review bonus and sales commission structures, as well as position descriptions.
The SNPA salary survey can be a useful tool in conjunction with other salary studies to make sure that your salary ranges are in line with others in the industry. You can share the information gleaned from the survey with your department heads and provide them with a good base to use as they perform performance reviews and discuss any merit increases with their employees. Knowing where their salaries fall in comparison with other newspapers can be very valuable during these discussions. The survey also provides managers with data that allows them to review staffing levels as compared to other newspapers of similar size.
There is much knowledge and data to be gained from the SNPA salary survey, but it is only as good as the information gathered. We need the participation of everyone to ensure that we are getting a good representation of newspapers of all circulation sizes, both daily and non-daily.
In the right-hand column, are links to the survey questionnaire for members. (Links to questionnaires for non-members are available below). Be sure to select the questionnaire that is appropriate for your circulation size. Then, please route this questionnaire to the person in your organization who can properly complete and submit the information back to SNPA. Let's all work together to make this year's survey the best and most complete ever.
